It is expected that the new Cracking Down on Crooked Consultants Act will make it a criminal offence to provide immigration services without proper licensing, with up to $50,000 fine and up to 2 years in jail for those who dare. Currently only members of the Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants and licensed Canadian lawyers are legally authorized to provide any kinds of services in relation to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. However, this provision has not been strictly enforced, making it possible for bogus immigration consultants and paralegals worldwide to work in this field illegally. Seriousness of this issue is acknowledged by the authorities and now we're about to have new legislation in place in response to the situation. Besides, series of international agreements are prepared to support the enforcement not only in Canada but in other countries as well. More details on thestar.com website.
